The
Chopmist Fire Tower, constructed in 1917, was staffed by a fire
observer, who was tasked with collecting fire data to help coordinate
fire suppression efforts. But this was not the only way the Chopmist
Fire Tower was utilized. During WWII, Forest Ranger George E. Matteson
spotted a German U-boat off of Point Judith, which he promptly reported
to the navy.
The tower today is about 85 feet tall and is surrounded by a
breathtaking forest canopy. Visitors, on a beautiful clear day can
expect to be greeted by a wonderful view of the
Proof of Visit: Bring your
team scorecard to the fire tower and it will be stamped by DEM
Forestry staff.
